Officers from the Nassau County Police Department on patrol at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24 attempted to stop the driver of a 2012 Nissan Rogue for driving erratically on the Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.

When officers attempted to stop the driver, the vehicle sped away southbound on Newbridge Road, police said.

The driver could be seen driving recklessly and struck parked vehicles on Bush Street, Fairview Avenue and First Avenue.

Police said that after striking the third vehicle, the driver, Hempstead resident Oscar Ramos Lopez, 18, exited his vehicle, ignored officers' verbal commands and fled on foot.

After a brief foot pursuit and with the help of Nassau County Police canine units Ramos Lopez was located hiding in an open detached garage on First Street.

After a struggle with officers, Ramos Lopez was taken into police custody. The subsequent investigation also found the vehicle Ramos Lopez was driving had been reported stolen from Hempstead on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Ramos Lopez was charged with third-degree grand larceny, driving while intoxicated, criminal trespassing, three counts of leaving the scene of an incident, resisting arrest, and reckless driving.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at First District Court in Hempstead.
